Master bedroom re-do

A while back Jami from An Oregon Cottage started talking about updating her master bedroom. Well, that totally inspired me.

I’m a little slow to change. I think and think and think about something and then when I decided what I want, I want it right now.

The last house we lived in (a rent house) had a lot of color – every room had 2-3 colors on the walls and no colors were repeated in different rooms. This house had all white walls when we bought it. White walls aren’t my favorite but I think I needed a color break for a while – which is part of why we’ve gone slow on the updating of this 50 year old home.

Here’s what our room looked like when we first moved in. Our furniture is mismatched – which is totally fine, I love that the dresser with the mirror was Carl’s great grandmothers.

Here’s the the other side of the room. Our home is small – about 1500sf – and this room is about 13X15. Perfect for us.

I’ve been looking for new bedding for quite a while – like over a year. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted but I knew I wanted a duvet (I already have down comforter), I wanted cotton – not shiny fabric, I also wanted the colors to look fresh – but not too feminine.

I also spent a couple of weeks with paint samples on the walls deciding just what color of taupe I liked best. Here’s what it looks like now…

Overall, I love it. It’s amazing what a coat of paint and new bedding can do for a room. We also moved the furniture around. The window on the wall that the bed is on is not centered and it’s taken me a long time to figure out what to do with the furniture arrangement. Like I said, I’m kind of slow at times.

I bought the curtains a few months after we moved in, they were on clearance at WalMart for $3 a panel. So I really wanted the new bedding to match. I finally found this at Amazon, but then the supplier was out of stock and they canceled my order. However, I found it on Overstock a few days later.

The paint color is Valspar’s Homestead Resort Parlor Taupe, it looks more yellow in the photos than it does in real life. The white is Olympic Delicate White.

I do still want something on the wall above the bed. I’m thinking maybe vinyl letters with a scripture on it?

You can see the other rooms we’ve done here and here.

What do you think?

Thanks, MamaHen. I actually call it a vanity but got corrected by Carl's mom so now I call it the dresser with the mirror. I was so humbled when she gave it to me along with several other family heirlooms. Thanks for visiting.
