What would you call this class?

There are several books that I want our children to read in their late high school years that are not your traditional literature type books. They are probably what some people would call “self help” books, but I really don’t like that name. We’re trying to develop this class for our homeschool co-op next year since we think they will be more interesting with lots of discussion.

Some of the books we are using are:

Do Hard Things  by Alex and Brett Harris – I love the the subtitle “A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations.” I’m reading the book right now and am really liking it. It is written in a coversational style and by a couple young men and I think it will inspire. Even though they say some hard things, they do it in such a way that is inspiring – not discouraging.

No More Dreaded Mondays by Dan Miller – I read this book a couple of months ago and even though I don’t dread mondays I was very inspired by the book. He encourages you to find your calling and work within that calling.

48 Days to the Work You Love by Dan Miller – This is similar to No More Dreaded Mondays but has daily activities for you to do. Some of those activities include things like thinking about where you’ve been and where you want to be, what you enjoy and don’t enjoy – even if you might be good at it.

Practical Happiness by Bob Schultz – Even though this is written for young men, I think there is value in it for young women. We seem to live in a society that is not content, we alway want something more, bigger or what someone else has. I want my children to realize that it is okay to chose not to keep up with the Jones’.

7 Habits of Highly Effective People  by Stephen Covey – This book focuses on things like self mastery, time management, positive thinking and effective communication. I have not read it in years but will be re-reading it this summer.

How to Win Friends and Influence People  by Dale Carnegie – Another oldie but goodie that I haven’t read in years but will reread this summer.

This will not be the first time my children have heard this stuff, these are all principles we value and have taught over the years. I think it good for them to hear them from someone other than mom and dad at times.

So, I’m thinking of names like…
             “Finding your passion”
“Create the life you always wanted”
             “Making your dreams a reality”
             “Don’t waste your life”
             “Go against the flow”

Any other ideas for a name for the class? I’m guessing whatever it is we’ll have to explain it on the high school transcript!

Thanks for sharing with your friends!

I like "Living Your Dream". My oldest son suggested "Don't be a bum." Or "Anti-Bumology 101". I'll have to let you guys know what we settle on.

Hi - thanks for dropping by and leading me to your blog! I loved seeing your hickens :)I have to say my mind has gone blank over suggestions for the class name. Surprising, because I do enjoy that genre of book. Something positive like Living your dream? Sounds like a great idea for a class. xx
