The Amazing Pillowcase Dress Sew~Along {Supply List}

So, what exactly do you need to make a traditional pillowcase dress? Fortunately, not much. Here’s the basic list…
  • pillowcase
  • ribbon
  • sewing machine
  • matching thread
  • ric rac or other embellishments (optional)
For some of the other variations you will need…
  • 1/4″ elastic
  • elastic thread
  • bias tape (you can make your own, if you want)
  • extra fabric for lining
My sister and I and the girls went to a quilt shop hop this weekend and
found some great fabric for dresses. Esther picked out the purple for her dress.
About the pillowcases…you can use a regular ol’ pillowcase and make the dress look really cute with some embellishments. You can use a vintage pillowcases or embroidered pillowcases that you find at a thrift store. You can also use about a yard of fabric. I’ll be using a mix of all of these. These dresses can also be made out of t-shirt fabric. There is so much room for creativity in this project.

Sizes…The cool thing about pillowcase dresses is that there really isn’t exact sizes. I know that can drive some of you crazy but just go with it…it’ll be ok, I promise. If you’re using a pillowcase the width is determined for your (although you can make is narrower for a baby if you want to). If you’re not using a pillowcase the width of the fabric is about 3X the chest measurement depending on how gathered you want the dress.

Here’s some suggestions for the length (although you can just measure your girl and add 1.5″ if using a pillowcase and 3.5″ if using fabric)…
  6 months – 15″
12 months – 17″
18 months – 18″
2T – 19″
3T – 21″
4T – 23″
size 5 – 25″
size 6/7 – 27″
size 8/10 – 31″
size 11/12 – 35″
So get out those pillowcases you’ve been hanging on to or go find some cute fabric at the fabric store. Check out a couple of thrift stores to find some great pillowcases, sheets or even embellishments to make some super cute dresses.
Don’t forget you can donate some dresses to Little Dresses for Africa or Dress a Girl Around the World.
I can’t wait to see what you create!
