Note: Once a week I share a popular post from the archives. This post was originally published in June 2014.
When my big kids were little we used to get matching flag shirts every year. I loved matching shirts. In fact, my children would match anytime we left the house. People thought it was cute. It was actually a mom survival technique. I figured if any of them ever got lost, I would be able to tell the police exactly what they were wearing. I know, it was lame, but that’s how I survived having 5 kids in 8 years.
Well, all my older kids are beyond wearing matching clothes but Esther is still little and she is excited to pretty much do whatever I want her to do and I thought it would be fun for her to have a flag shirt for July 4th. (How’s that for a run on sentence)
So, we made one…
…in five minutes!
Here is what you need…
White T-Shirt
Blue acrylic craft paint
Red acrylic craft paint
Textile medium (I’ve used an affiliate link here so you know what I’m talking about, but you can probably find this cheaper locally)
Paint brushes
Freezer Paper
oh, and a cute child
Cut a piece of freezer paper and put it inside the t-shirt shiny side up (this is important).
Mix 2 parts blue paint with 1 part textile medium in a bowl (or plate or piece of cardboad) and then paint your child’s hand with it.
Help your child make a hand print on the shirt. We practiced a few times without paint first.
Wash child’s hand.
Mix red paint with textile medium.
Paint 5 stripes on shirt across from handprint.
Let dry overnight.
Have a great 4th of July!

Thanks! I wish I had posted it last week but it was a spur of the moment type thing that happened last weekend.
