eggs…eggs…eggs

The Rhode Island Red hens have started laying! Phoebe and Benjamin are collecting 10-12 eggs a day. They are brown and the Barred Rocks and Buff Orrpingtons will also lay brown eggs. But we did adopt some hens from a neighbor and I think that 4 of them might be Americanas and if they are we’ll have a few green eggs mixed in with the brown. We should know in a couple of months.

Thanks for sharing with your friends!

Patty, we are having such a fun time collecting them. I bet the hen house gets checked 5-6 times a day! It's so cool to see the different shades of brown and some have white spots and some have darker brown spots. Who knew eggs could have such variety.

I love looking at homegrown eggs; collecting them is almost as fun as eating them!

Your enamel bowl is perfect for displaying your eggs. I love enamel and am always on the lookout for them at second hand store.

Rachel, most hens need to be about 6 months old before they will start laying. Some longer some a little shorter. It also depends on if you let them free range or if you feed them "feed". We do a both and some of our Reds are now 7 months and just now laying. That's okay with us, we've read that if you don't rush them to grow they will be healthier and will lay longer than if you rush them. A great book is The Joy of Keeping Chickens by Jennifer Megyesi.

Oh, I am so wanting some laying hens right now. At 45 grosz an egg (14c)I would think having my own hens would be cheaper.

My husband even commented the other day he wants to have hens. So, how long does it take from chicks to laying?
