Me: Hi, Mom.
Mom: Hi, Angela (she's the only who calls me that even when I'm not in trouble) {insert chit chat}. By they way, we ordered Phoebe and Benjamin 25 chicks for their egg business. They'll be delivered the first week of February. Is that ok?
Me: Really??? That's great. They'll be so excited. {chit chat continues for a while}
I'm not sure when I thought the first week of February was, but I wasn't thinking it was Monday.
So, I was quite surprised when my mom called Sunday and said the chicks would be here tomorrow...yikes!
And sure enough, I got a 7:30am call from the post office that they would like me to be there at 8:00am to pick up the chicks.
Here's how they came. It's the first time we've had chicks delivered through the mail. They did great. They are Black Austrolorps. This hatchery included a free hen (I guess just in case one died in route) and a free "rare breed" straight run chick. We have no clue what kind it is but it's the one with the brown on her head. We're hoping she's a girl. Esther's named her "Cutie".
We hurriedly set up the brooder cage, or "chicken condo" as we affectionately call it. This was a hand me down from my mom and her husband who used to keep lots of chickens. It's way too much for a small operation like ours but it is very nice to have and we are very thankful.
As Phoebe and Benjamin took each chick out of the box they dipped the beaks in the water. They took right to it and to the feed.
I don't mention our dog, Rascal, here very often. But I had to include this picture. When Benjamin and I got home from picking up the chicks, the older children had taken the brooder out of the barn and put it in the garage... and left the gate open. This is what we drove up to. He stood there on guard until I walked up and shut the gate. He's a good dog.
Now, we just need to enlarge our coop...

Good dog indeed! I saw the picture of your chicks and knew they were Black Austrolorps. They are so cute. How fun!
ReplyDeletewow, I've never heard of them before. Do you have some? They are supposed to be super good layers.
DeleteSweet, sweet, sweet! I really miss having baby chicks. What company did your mom order these from?
ReplyDeleteShe ordered from McMurry Hatcheries. www.mcmurryhatchery.com They're in Iowa but they shipped them on Feb 1st and we picked them up on Feb 4th. It was pretty cool that they included a couple of extras. I don't know if that's pretty standard or not. You should get some.
DeleteSuch sweet chicks - we love out australorp.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteThat is standard practice with Murray McMurry. We use them and have only lost one or two chicks in the four orders we've made over the years.
ReplyDeleteThat's good to know. So far we are very pleased with them.
DeleteAwww how cute! I had an australorp once and she was so beautiful. Her black feathers had a gorgeous emerald sheen to them in the sunlight. Congrats on the new additions :)
ReplyDeleteHow pretty. I can't wait for them to mature.
DeleteYou'll love Black Australorps - they're a wonderful breed. Good luck with enlarging the coop!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the encouragement. I think my job will be plan maker and picture taker.
DeleteWe've got a couple black australorps and just order a few more for later this month (also from McMurray). I really like them. They're pretty friendly, pretty good foragers, and definitely good layers. McMurray has a great selection of heritage breeds and lets you mix and match more than a lot of other hatcheries.
ReplyDeleteThat's good to hear. Our other hens are pretty tame, that's important to us. Their laying stats as the reason they picked this breed for us.
DeleteEnjoy. I have never owned Australorps, but hope to soon. Your kids will learn so much.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how much they've learne...and retained... about chickens and bees. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteNothing quite like a surprise order of chicks! LOL Australorps are a lovely breed. Enjoy your new peeps. I'm looking forward to seeing your coop expansion!
